What the Best Marketing Book Never Tells You

The Marketing Book Nobody Reads (But Every Founder Should)

There's a book on my desk.

I keep saying I'll read it. I haven't.

It's called Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz. Published 1966. Out of print. Sells for $150 used.

David Deutsch has read it. He's read it probably ten times.

He's one of the best direct response copywriters alive. And when I asked him to break it down live.. he delivered.

Here's what I learned.

You Cannot Create Desire

This is the big one.

Most companies build their marketing backwards.

They have a product. They try to make people want it. They push features. They push awards. They push "we're number one."

Schwartz says this is impossible.

You cannot create desire. You can only tap into desire that already exists.

Think about what that means for your marketing.

Your customer is already desperate for something. They're lying awake at 3am about something. They're telling their spouse they need to fix something.

Your job is not to make them want your product.

Your job is to show them that your product already connects to what they already desperately want.

Salesforce's website says "the number one AI CRM." Clay's website says "go to market with unique data and the ability to act on it."

One is about Salesforce. One is about the customer's desire.

Which one converts?

The Sophistication Trap

Here's where most B2B founders get this wrong.

David calls it market sophistication. And it's the second big idea from Breakthrough Advertising.

If your market has heard every promise a hundred times.. you need a completely different angle.

Example. Weight loss. In the 1950s you could say "lose 10 pounds" and people would buy. That was new. That was direct. That worked.

Today? You need "why French women don't get fat." You need a completely new mechanism. A new villain. A new promise.

Same problem. Completely different angle.

Now ask yourself.. are you pitching your B2B product like it's 1950 in your market? Or are you reading the room?

Most founders I work with are pitching at level one sophistication in a level five market.

They say "we help you close more deals" and wonder why nobody calls.

What Barnes & Noble Got Right

David picked Barnes & Noble as his winner this week.

And it's a brilliant case study.

They were dying. Amazon was killing them. They were closing stores. The publisher money had corrupted their curation. The stores felt like airports.

A new CEO came in from England. And he did something radical.

He gave the stores back to the people who ran them.

San Francisco store? You decide what books go in the window. You know your customers. You hire people who love books. You build a cafe people actually want to sit in.

They stopped chasing the publisher's promotional money. They sacrificed revenue to build a better experience.

And they came back.

The lesson for you.. are you optimizing for short term conversion or long term experience? Are you letting the people closest to your customers make the decisions?

Because your best marketing is often inside your own team. Not in your ad spend.

The AI Copy Problem

David made a prediction I agree with.

AI-generated copy is going to become increasingly obvious and increasingly toxic.

Not just because of the "fingerprints" - the mdashes and the corporate filler. But because people can feel it.

You read it and something is... off. It sounds like it should sound. But it's not doing anything.

David described it as "next word, next word, next word." It's average by design. It averages out everything that makes your brand human.

The founders who invest in genuinely human copy right now - even AI-assisted human copy - will have a massive advantage. Because everyone else will be invisible.

One Question to Ask Yourself

Before you write a single word of marketing this week.. ask this:

What does my customer desperately want that I am not speaking to?

Not what do they want from me. What do they want in life?

When you can connect your product to that.. you don't need to create desire.

It's already there.
