When Marriage Turns Into Logistics: What Marine Command Teams Know

marriage sprintlife time freedom

Picture Sunday night. The dishes are done, the kitchen still smells of dish soap, the week's calendar is sorted. You sit down next to each other on the couch, and neither of you can remember the last time you talked about anything but logistics.

A very efficient household. Then one of you says it out loud: where are we actually going?

🐬 The Marine Corps has a useful picture for this.

One looks out, one looks in

A Marine unit is led by a command team. The shorthand:

The Commanding Officer (CO) looks out. The mission, the threats, the opportunities, where we're going and why.

The Executive Officer (XO) looks in. Runs the staff: schedules, supplies, readiness, whether people have what they need.

🌴 A marriage has the same two jobs.

The horizon: long-term money, career moves, where to live, what the two of you stand for, the boundaries with relatives and friends.

The home: daily routines, the budget, who picks up what, doctor's appointments, how each of you is really doing, and the warmth under your roof.

Keep your eyes only on the horizon and home starts to feel lonely. Keep your eyes only on the home and you wake up in ten years wondering where the time went.

Where the Marines stop being the model

A Marine unit has a chain of command. A marriage doesn't. Nobody outranks anybody.

So you don't get a fixed CO and a fixed XO. And neither job comes with a gender. You take turns, by season and by strength.

One of you leads a move across the country, while the other keeps the budget steady. A year later you swap, because now the big question is the retirement numbers, and that's the other one's strength.

Your differences are why this works. One of you reads the map, one of you reads the room.

Agree on the intent, then stop checking

Marine doctrine has a tool called commander's intent. It's a clear statement of what success looks like, so people can act when the plan changes without calling back for permission.

Your version is one sentence you both said yes to. "This year we pay off the debt." Or: "This year we're home for dinner four nights a week."

Once that sentence exists, the small decisions get lighter. Whoever is running the budget doesn't need a vote on every purchase. Whoever is dreaming about next year doesn't get accused of living in the clouds.

🐯 You both know where you're headed.

Three ways the team breaks

Two COs. Each of you holds a different vision of the future, and nobody is minding the inside. The arguments get loud, and the laundry piles up behind them.

Two XOs. The dishes, the errands, the bills. Everything works. Nobody looks up.

The resentful XO. One of you is left alone with the messy daily reality, while the other talks about big dreams and offers no real help. That one leaves a bitter taste, and it eats trust.

Look for your own marriage in those three without blaming anyone. Any couple can drift into one of them for a season.

20 minutes this week

Sit down together. Phones in another room, something good to drink.

Ask each other two questions:

  1. Which part are you carrying alone right now?
  2. What's our one sentence for the next 12 months?

🐬 Then listen. You don't need to solve anything that night.

Picture next Sunday night. Same couch. You both know the sentence, and the talk is about where you're going, not who does what on Tuesday.
