Discovery Call Questions: Let the Buyer Feel the Result First

podcast-appearance

The discovery call went well. They nodded, they laughed, they asked for the deck. Then they said "send me something," and the thread went quiet.

Most founders blame the deck, or the price, or the timing. The real gap usually sits earlier. In forty minutes, the buyer never felt what working with you would be like. They only heard about it. And that deal was already in your forecast for the quarter.

I talked this through with George Wright III on the Valiant CEO Podcast (January 2025). Listen to the full conversation: Mastering Sales Psychology with Simon Severino

You don't have the product on the call. You only have the conversation.

Here's the uncomfortable part of selling a service. On the call, there is no product to touch. No demo that does the work for you. As I said to George: "You have only the conversation itself. So this is where you have to land value to move forward."

That changes the job of the discovery call. It's not there to explain your offer. It's there to give the buyer a small sample of the result, while you're still talking.

And the tool for that is not slides. "The best way to sample that is not presentations is by asking the right questions."

Work backwards from month six to minute forty

Start at the end. Somebody works with you for six months. What has changed in their business, and in their week?

Now walk it back. What could they feel in the first seven days? In the first four hours? Then go one step further: what could they feel in the first forty minutes of the sales call?

That last sample is the one most founders skip. It's also the one that decides whether there's a second call.

🐬 Six months, seven days, four hours, forty minutes. Each one a smaller taste of the same result.

What a sample question sounds like

On the show I used a simple example. Say you sell a CRM. You don't open with features. You ask how they follow up with leads right now.

They explain. Then you ask: "What do you do if you forget to follow up?"

And they go: "Oh my God, how do you know that I frequently forget to follow up?"

In that moment they see two pictures side by side. The broken flow they live with today, and the flow they'll have three months from now, when nothing slips. They felt the difference before you showed them anything.

That's what a good discovery question does. It doesn't collect data. It lets the buyer experience a small piece of the outcome.

Three questions per step, in your buyer's words

With our clients, we build their own sales script around the 8 Steps of the Repeatable Sale. Eight stages, and in each one, three powerful questions that are relevant to their buyers and that they feel good asking, because the questions show their expertise.

Take the classic stall: "It's not the right time." Most sellers argue, offer a discount, or promise to check back next quarter. A founder with a prepared question asks one that shows they understand exactly why it isn't the right time, in this buyer's world. For example: is it the budget cycle, or is the team still stretched from the last hire? Then they give the buyer enough time to think.

The buyer's reaction is the one you want: this person knows exactly where I am.

🐯 That's control of the conversation. You lead with questions, and you never have to push.

Credibility comes from their world, not your résumé

Many founders try to earn credibility on the call by talking about themselves. The case studies, the years, the logos. It's a lot of work, and the call goes stale.

There's a shorter path. "Credibility happens when you have intimacy with their world."

When you're immersed in the buyer's world, the rest gets easy. You use their words. You know how it feels and how hard it is. You don't ask questions they already know the answer to, and you don't waste their time. They think: this person knows exactly what I'm going through. That's the credibility that gets you from a discovery call to a second meeting.

Ask, then listen

On the show I shared what we saw in the six to eight client sales recordings we were reviewing every day. One number kept showing up. Sellers who talk around 28% of the time win around 70% of their deals. The difference is listening. "But listening is not enough. You have to ask the right question and then listen."

The right question opens the door. The silence after it is where the buyer walks through.

That silence matters again later, at the price. Say your price with confidence, then stop talking. If you rush to justify it, you're telling the buyer you don't believe it yourself.

🌴 Fewer words from you. More of the call in their voice.

Start this week

If you only do one thing, write that one question before your next discovery call.

  1. Write the six-month result in one sentence, the way a happy client would say it.
  2. Shrink it to forty minutes. What small piece of that result could the buyer feel on the call?
  3. Write one question that makes them feel it. Like the CRM question: about their real day, the moment where it breaks.
  4. Ask it, then wait. Count to five in your head before you say anything else.

Every week without that question is another week of calls that end in "send me something." Picture the other version. The buyer stops mid-sentence, laughs, and says: how do you know that? From there, you're leading the call, and the next meeting is their idea. That's how Sprintlife starts: control in sales, and the time freedom that comes with it.
