Business Coaching for Performance-Driven Founders: What to Demand
By Simon Severino, founder of Strategy Sprints, where 2,400+ B2B founders have gone through our programs. Updated October 2026.
The right business coaching for a performance-driven founder is measured like everything else you run: one clear bottleneck, a fixed process to fix it, work on your live business (not theory), and a score every week that shows whether it's working. If a coach can't tell you what you'll measure on Friday, you're paying for conversation, not progress. 🐬
You already track your numbers, your training, maybe your sleep. You want to see progress, not feel it. Think back to the first time a real number told you the truth (about your training, your sleep or your business). It changed what you did next. Most coaching is still sold on feelings. That's the gap. Close it and you get what you hired a coach for: faster growth, more control, and your time back.
What does a performance-driven founder need from a coach?
Four things. Most coaching delivers one or two.
- A diagnosis, not a menu. One bottleneck named in the first weeks, not twelve themes to explore.
- A process with steps. Something you can run on a bad day, not a mindset.
- Live work. Your real deals, your real team, your real week.
- A score. A short list of numbers you look at every Friday.
Driven founders get bored fast with coaching that stays abstract. That boredom is a good signal. It means you want reps, not reflection.
So this isn't for the founder who wants a sounding board and no homework. It's for the one who wants a number to beat every Friday.
Which bottleneck should you coach first?
Start where the money stops. For most B2B founders between a few million and the ten-million mark, it's one of three:
- "I need more leads, but I don't have time for marketing." Nothing produces leads without your calendar.
- "It takes many meetings to close. We get ghosted." The right things happen in the wrong order.
- "We're not landing deals in the size we want." The price shows up before the buyer has named what the problem costs.
Notice that all three sit in sales. Leadership, strategy and mindset matter. But if you're still the only closer, the fastest lever for the whole company is control of the sales conversation. 🐯
Here is a quick test. Look at your last five deals that went quiet. Did they stall before or after the proposal? If most stalled after, your bottleneck isn't motivation. It's the order of your call.
What process should a coach install?
For sales, ours is the 8 Steps of the Repeatable Sale. In order, every time:
- Visualize. Picture what the buyer describes, mirror their last few words, match their pace, then lead.
- Frustration. "What's the frustration? What have you already tried?"
- Importance. "How important is this, in the context of everything else going on?"
- Cost of Inaction. "What happens if you do nothing?" Then silence. Let them say it.
- Deliverables. "What do you want to achieve in the next 10 days?"
- Investment. Time, people, then money. In that order.
- Starting Date. "To which starting date are we committing?"
- Statement of Work. Sent before the next meeting, in the buyer's own words.
The point isn't the list. The point is that a new sales hire can run it without you. That's what turns your best call into a company skill. It's the difference between the founder whose team closes while they're at the race, and the founder who takes sales calls from the hotel lobby.
Feel the difference on your next call. You stop pushing. The buyer says the cost out loud, then the start date. You hear yourself ask the question and wait, and the yes comes to you. It tastes better than any closed deal you had to push for.
How do you measure coaching like you measure performance?
Two sessions a week, three numbers.
- Monday Strategy. Fresh week, clean slate. Set the week: which deals move, to which step, how many new conversations you start.
- Friday Learnings. Score it: where each deal really got to, what worked, what you drop.
The three numbers: discovery calls booked, deals that reached Step 7 (a named start date), and deals signed. If a coach wants you to track twenty metrics, they're measuring activity, not progress.
The Friday scorecard does something a good feeling never does. It shows the win in black and white, and it shows the miss early enough to fix it on Monday. 🌴
Business coach, executive coach or sales coach: which one?
Pick by the bottleneck, not by the title.
- Executive coach: your leadership, your patterns, how you show up for the team.
- Business coach: the whole company: priorities, structure, the plan.
- Sales coach: one skill on live deals: what you say, in what order, and the weekly score.
If revenue growth is the goal and you still close most deals yourself, start with sales. The others get easier once the pipeline stops depending on your evenings.
What should you ask a coach before you hire them?
Five questions. Listen for specifics.
- "What will we measure every Friday?"
- "What's your process, step by step?"
- "Will you work on my live deals, or on examples?"
- "Who else is in the room?" (Peers who see your scorecard raise the bar fast.)
- "Can my team run this without me in three months?"
And watch the call itself. Does the coach lead it calmly, or chase you for a yes? You'll learn to sell the way your coach sells to you.
What does staying on the old way cost?
It's quiet. Deals sit at "send me a proposal". The JOLT Effect research (Dixon & McKenna, 2022) found 40 to 60% of qualified deals end in no decision. Not lost. Just never decided. Meanwhile the salespeople you hired wait for you, and the time you wanted for family and training slides to next month.
At Strategy Sprints we coach B2B founders on exactly this: the 8 Steps on your live deals, Monday Strategy and Friday Learnings, and spotters who push you through your current sales wall. Before Strategy Sprints, I coached 2,000+ teams, including Google, BMW and Airbus. Three ways in: 🐬
- Test the method: the monthly public Jetpack Workshop ($199, about 2 hours online).
- Weekly reps with peers: the 200K Club, five founders, one 60-minute live call a week, a coach on call in the app (€980 a month incl. taxes).
- Install it in your team: the 90-Day Sales Acceleration ($9,000 a month for 3 months).
Your first rep this week: pick one live deal and write down which of the 8 steps it's really on. Where the buyer last spoke, not where you hope it is. Then bring it to a coach, or to a room of founders doing the same rep.
If you train for races, read sales coaching for founders who are endurance athletes. If you're about to hire, read how to stop being the only closer in your company.
FAQ
What is the best business coaching for performance-driven founders?
Coaching you can measure: one named bottleneck, a fixed process, work on your live business and a weekly score. For B2B founders still closing most deals, that usually means sales coaching first.
How do I know if business coaching is working?
Look at your Friday numbers: discovery calls booked, deals with a named start date, deals signed. If they don't move within the first weeks, change something.
Should I hire a business coach or a sales coach?
Pick by the bottleneck. If growth depends on you closing deals, start with a sales coach. If the problem is leadership or structure, a business or executive coach fits better.
How often should a coach meet a founder?
Weekly works best, with access in between for the moment before a big call.
Is group coaching good for driven founders?
Yes, if the group is small and works on real deals. Peers who see your scorecard every week keep the standard high.
