Sales Coaching for Founders Who Are Endurance Athletes
By Simon Severino, founder of Strategy Sprints, where 2,400+ B2B founders have gone through our programs. Updated October 2026.
The right sales coaching for a founder who runs, rides or races works like your training plan: a fixed sequence of steps, practiced on real calls, measured every week, with a coach who watches you perform and tells you what to fix. If a sales coach can't show you the plan, the reps and the scorecard, keep looking. 🐬
You already live this way on Strava or Garmin. You track, you review, you adjust. Your sales week deserves the same. The real gap is rarely effort. It's control of the conversation: who leads the call, who sets the pace, who waits for whom.
Get that back and deals close at your price (bigger deals, no discount), your new hires stop waiting for you, and your evenings go back to training and family.
Why do endurance athletes make coachable founders?
Because you already accept three things most of the business world fights.
- Progress is measured, not felt. You don't guess your threshold. You test it.
- Someone outside sees what you can't. A coach spots the form break at kilometre 30 that you never notice.
- Consistency beats heroics. One brutal session doesn't make a season. A boring, repeated week does.
Think back to the first season you trained with a real plan. The jump came fast, because someone finally measured the right things. Sales works the same way. The founder who "has a good feeling" about a deal is guessing their threshold. The founder who knows which step every deal is on is training.
What does a sales training plan look like?
A training plan has phases in a fixed order. You don't race before base. A sales call has the same logic (think periodisation, for one conversation). Ours is the 8 Steps of the Repeatable Sale:
- Visualize. Picture what the buyer describes, mirror their last few words, match their pace, then lead. This is your warm-up.
- Frustration. "What's the frustration? What have you already tried?"
- Importance. "How important is this, in the context of everything else going on?"
- Cost of Inaction. "What happens if you do nothing?" Then silence. Let them say it.
- Deliverables. "What do you want to achieve in the next 10 days?"
- Investment. Time, people, then money. In that order.
- Starting Date. "To which starting date are we committing?"
- Statement of Work. Sent before the next meeting, in the buyer's own words.
Skip a phase and you pay later. Price before Step 4 is like racing on no base: it looks fast for a while, then the deal blows up at kilometre 35. 🐯
Run the steps in order and something shifts. You stop chasing. You hear the buyer say the cost, the start date and the scope out loud, in their words. You lead, they say yes. That yes tastes sweeter than a cold drink at the finish line.
What should a sales coach do that a training coach does?
Use your own coach as the benchmark. A good sales coach:
- Watches you perform. Not your slides. Your real calls, recorded or live.
- Names one thing to fix. "You named the price before they named the cost." One cue, not twenty.
- Gives you reps. You practice the hard moment (the silence after "what happens if you do nothing?") until it feels normal.
- Reviews the week with you. What worked, what failed, what you'll change on Monday.
- Pushes you through the wall. We call these people spotters, like in the gym. They're there when you'd otherwise stop.
If your sales coach only motivates you, you've hired a cheerleader, not a coach.
This kind of coaching is not for you if you want a pep talk and no homework. It is for you if you want a plan, a score and someone honest on the sideline.
How do you track sales like you track training?
Two sessions a week.
- Monday Strategy. Fresh legs, clean slate. Set the week: which deals, which step each one moves to, how many new conversations you start. That's your planned workout.
- Friday Learnings. Score it: where each deal actually got to, what worked, what to drop. That's your post-session upload.
Track three numbers, no more: discovery calls booked, deals that reached Step 7 (a named start date), and deals signed. Like heart rate, pace and power. Anything else is noise.
The Friday scorecard then shows the win in black and white, the same way a new PR shows up on your watch. 🌴
What mistakes do athlete founders make in sales?
None of these are character flaws. They're habits the old way of selling rewards.
- Grinding volume without form. More calls with the wrong order just trains the wrong pattern. Fix the sequence first.
- Racing every session. Pushing for a close on every call. Some calls exist to reach Step 4, not Step 8.
- Training alone. You'd never prepare for a big race without a coach. The old way of selling still treats the founder as a lone hero.
- Skipping recovery. You can't hold control of a call at the end of a 14-call day. By call ten the pitch goes stale and the buyer smells it. Fewer, better calls win.
How do you find a sales coach who fits an athlete's mindset?
First, the honest cost of staying on the old way. It's quiet. Deals stall at "send me a proposal". New hires wait for you to close. Training sessions slide to next week. The JOLT Effect research (Dixon & McKenna, 2022) found 40 to 60% of qualified deals end in no decision. Not lost to a rival. Just never decided.
Ask any coach these four questions:
- "What's your process, step by step?" (You want a plan, not "it depends".)
- "How do you measure my progress each week?" (You want a scorecard.)
- "Will you listen to my real calls?" (You want someone who watches.)
- "Can my sales hires run the same process?" (You want something that scales past you.)
At Strategy Sprints we run exactly this: the 8 Steps on your live deals, Monday Strategy and Friday Learnings, and spotters on your calls. Before Strategy Sprints, I coached 2,000+ teams, including Google, BMW and Airbus. Three ways in, pick the one that fits your season: 🐬
- Test the method: our monthly public Jetpack Workshop ($199, about 2 hours online).
- Train weekly: the 200K Club, with four other founders who see your scorecard (one 60-minute live call a week, a coach on call in the app, €980 a month incl. taxes).
- Hand it to your new hires: the 90-Day Sales Acceleration installs the process so they run it without you ($9,000 a month for 3 months).
Your first rep this week: open your pipeline, pick one live deal and write down which of the 8 steps it's really on. Not where you hope it is. Where the buyer last spoke. Then bring it to a coach, or to a room of founders doing the same rep.

FAQ
Is there sales coaching specifically for founders who are endurance athletes?
Few coaches market to athletes directly. Look for one who works like a training coach: a fixed process, real calls reviewed, a weekly scorecard. Strategy Sprints coaches B2B founders exactly this way.
Why are athletes good at sales?
They already accept measurement, outside feedback and consistent practice. Those three habits make sales skills improve fast once the steps are clear.
What should I track in sales, like I track training?
Three numbers: discovery calls booked, deals with a named start date, deals signed. Plan them on Monday, score them on Friday.
How often should I meet my sales coach?
Weekly works best, like a training block. Daily access in between helps for the moment before a big call.
Can sales coaching give me more time to train?
That's the point. When your team can run the process without you, you're no longer the only closer, and your evenings and weekends come back.
