CEOs I coach run out of energy before they run out of strategy
Why I Schedule “Me time” (In the sauna)
A friend thinks I'm crazy because I listen to audiobooks in the sauna, while running a global firm and raising three kids under 9.
And he is probably right🤣. But here's what I know: most CEOs I coach run out of energy before they run out of strategy.
The Delegation Problem
You can delegate operations, marketing, sales.
You cannot delegate:
-
Strategy
-
Performance
-
Hiring and firing
-
Culture and Governance
Those need sharp thinking. And sharp thinking requires managing your energy.
The Sprint Reality
In the Sprint Club, we run weekly cycles:
Monday: Set one priority per person.
Tuesday-Thursday: Sprint on bottlenecks.
Friday: Learn what worked. Do more of that.
As simple as this. Subtraction more than addition.
Only adding to what’s working already. Which creates flow.
Energizers you can implement this week
5 Minutes: Gratitude List
Write down things you're grateful for from the last 48 hours.
Flow researcher Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has data on this. It shifts your mental state.
But here's the truth - if listing 20 things feels like homework, list 5. The point is the practice, not hitting a number.
6 Minutes: Read Something Different
A novel. Philosophy. History.
I'm listening to the Odyssey. Sprint Club members read whatever interests them.
Reading outside your field gives your brain different patterns to work with.
7 Minutes: Breathwork
I use Sadhguru's method. Others use Wim Hof or free apps.
Seven minutes changes your physiology. Simple as that.
12 Minutes: Walk Outside
I run every morning at sunrise. Seven years straight.
But walking works too. Trees and sunlight calm your nervous system. That's biology, not woo-woo.
15 Minutes: Exercise
High intensity. Weights if you're over 40. No breaks.
This creates the neurochemistry for better thinking. Not magic - just how bodies work.
20-60 Minutes: Sauna
Twenty minutes infrared. Thirty regular. Sixty if you have it.
Today: 20-minute sauna, Brett Jacobs audiobook, chapter three.
Is this essential? No. Does it help? Yes.
The Honest Truth
Can you succeed without these practices? Sure. Plenty of CEOs do.
But I've coached hundreds of leaders. The ones who manage their energy consistently make better decisions over longer periods.
The ones who don't often make one brilliant move, then three exhausted mistakes.
Your call which approach you prefer.
What To Do Next
Pick two or three from the list. Not all of them.
Put them in your calendar.
Test for a month. See if your decision quality improves.
If it doesn't, try something else.
