Prospecting Habit: Reach Out Daily Without Sounding Needy

podcast-appearance

You want a full pipeline. One that keeps filling while you build the company, and later, while your new sales hires carry it.

That takes reaching out to new people every day. Usually that's still you.

And some days it just doesn't happen. You feel the small knot before you hit send. Every outreach feels like a bet you might lose. No pickup. No reply. A no. And a quiet voice says: I'm interrupting them, I look desperate.

That feeling kills the habit. It also kills control on the call, because needy feels needy on the other side.

In our Sprint Club app this came up 12 times in one week, the week Darren and I recorded. Some version of: I know I should reach out to strangers, but I don't do it.

Five moves fix it. Ask if it matters. Strip out the story. Move the finish line. See the streak. Score the week on Friday.

I talked this through with Darren Mitchell on The Exceptional Sales Leader Podcast (June 2025). Darren has been part of 780+ podcasts, so he knows a thing or two about consistency. Listen to the full conversation: Using Strategy Sprints to Drive Exceptional Results, on The Exceptional Sales Leader

Is it really important? Ask that first

Before any habit, one question: does this actually matter?

For most founders the honest answer is yes. You're the owner. You're responsible for the economic progress of the company. An empty pipeline is a problem nobody else will solve for you.

So if it matters, the next question is: "How can we make it small and fun?" Small enough that you'll do it tomorrow. Fun enough that you'll still do it in ten years.

🐬 A habit that's small and fun is easier to keep than to stop. A rolling stone stays rolling.

Strip out the story you're telling yourself

Darren and I walked through a typical case. A founder who runs an IT agency. Great at IT. Doesn't see himself as a salesperson. Now someone tells him to reach out to strangers every day, and he hates it.

When we dig in, the story sounds like this: I interrupt them, I feel like an idiot, "And I might come across as desperate, which damages my brand."

Now look at the facts. There are IT problems. There are people who have them. He has solutions. "If they don't know it, they can't use it." It's all neutral.

"If you don't tell them your pipeline will stay weak forever."

That's it. No idiot, no desperate. Those are labels the old way of selling taught all of us, not facts. Take them out, and what's left is a simple, calm job: tell the right people what you can fix.

🐯 That shift is where control starts. You stop asking for a favor. You start offering a fix to people who have the problem.

Move the finish line

Here's the reframe that keeps people going over decades.

Most founders tie their outreach to the outcome. Did they pick up? Did they book? Did they sign? Every no leaves a bitter taste, and after a few weeks of it, the habit goes stale and quietly dies.

So we move the finish line. "The win is not after you close the deal." "The win is already reaching out."

And there's a second level. "So if you reach out, it's victory. If you reach out and they become your client, it's double victory."

You can't lose this game. The only way to lose is to stop playing.

In our coaching we even have victory sounds for it. You hear the win the moment you reach out, not weeks later when a contract lands.

🌴 Call it simple math about what you control. "The only thing in your control is the input." Whether the client buys is an output. Your daily reach-out is an input.

See the streak

The second piece is feedback you can see.

I learned this from my yoga teacher. After a one-year program he gave us daily exercises, and he knew we'd forget them. So he built an app he called the Mandala: two rows of 20, for 40 days in a row. You do it, you tick it off.

That Mandala inspired the habit calendar we use with our coaching clients. You reach out, you check it off, you see the streak grow. Five in a row makes the sixth easier. Your brain gets the small hit of pride every single day, not only on the day a deal closes.

🌴 If you track your runs on Garmin or Strava, you already know how this works. The streak pulls you out the door on the rainy days.

Then score the week on Friday

Daily habit, weekly learning.

On Monday you set the few priorities that move the needle. Then you run, with no meetings in between. On Friday you look at the numbers and ask what surprised you, on the upside and the downside.

On the podcast I used myself as the example. I said I'd ask six people for introductions. I asked three. That's a surprise on the downside. No finger pointing. Just: what happened? Maybe it was a hard week. Maybe the message doesn't land, and next week you test a different one.

That's Monday Strategy and Friday Learnings. The habit gives you the reps. Friday turns the reps into learning, and Monday feels like a clean break.

Start your prospecting habit this week: 5 steps

  1. Pick the number. Small enough to do on your worst day. On the podcast we talked about 10 to 15 new people a day. Start lower if you need to. Ten a day is fifty a week, over 200 reach-outs a month.
  2. Write down the old story. "I'm interrupting." "I look desperate." Then write the neutral fact next to it.
  3. Redefine the win. Reaching out is the win. A yes is the double win.
  4. Make a streak chart. Paper on the wall or a calendar. Tick it every day you do it.
  5. Review on Friday. What did you do, what surprised you, what will you test next week?

🐬 Do this for 40 days and listen to how you sound on calls. Less chasing. More leading. The founder who calls the shots in the conversation, not the one waiting for a yes.

🐯 That's Sprintlife. A pipeline that fills because the habit is small and fun, not because you forced yourself through another grind week.
