You Don't Have an AI Problem. You Have a Map Problem.

ai in sales b2b sales sales pipeline sales training

Mike Muhlfelder and I do a segment every week called "2 Takes From The Field." No script.. just what we're both seeing in the arena with real founders and real sales teams. This week we went looking for the opposite of a hot take. We went looking for what hasn't changed, and won't.

If you're running a $3-10M B2B company and you bought an AI tool in the last year that didn't move the pipeline needle.. this one's for you. Pre-revenue or pure enterprise RFP shop? Different list, different day.

Here's what made the list.

1. "I got a guy" beats your sales process

Mike's from Boston. Up there, "I got a guy" is basically a philosophy. Need a plumber, a mechanic, a barber.. you don't shop around, you call your guy.

It works the same way in B2B. You can run a pristine sales process, get the deal into forecast, do everything right.. and then the buyer goes to a dinner party and mentions they're looking at a new truck. Someone at the table says "why would you buy that? My brother-in-law sells Ford, he'll get you a better deal." Deal's dead. Doesn't matter how good your process was.

This is also, literally, the law. The FTC passed a rule a few years back that says you cannot use AI or robotics to sell directly to a human. A human has to sell to a human. AI can open the door. It can't close the relationship. If what you're selling has real strategic weight, humans stay in the process. Full stop.

2. Simple always wins

People don't buy from Amazon because they love Amazon. They buy from Amazon because it's simple. Click, ship, done. No re-entering your card, no re-explaining what you need.

Build your go-to-market the same way. Every step you can strip out between "interested" and "bought" is a step your competitor's complexity will lose to.

3. You don't have an AI problem. You have a map problem.

This is the one I'd underline twice. Most of the founders I talk to who say AI "isn't working" for them don't have a tooling problem. They have no shared, written map of how the business actually runs. How they attract people. How they close deals. How they deliver on the promise. How they learn from it and compound.

Without that map, every new hire spends their first weeks stealing your time instead of doing the work, because they have to ask you everything. Everyone builds their own spreadsheet. You get chaos. And the uncomfortable truth is: you can scale chaos. It just destroys the business while it scales.

More powerful models every few weeks doesn't fix this. It just lets you create faster chaos, or faster lucky punches, instead of a repeatable process.

4. The business exists to build more of itself

Mike put this well: Walmart exists to build more Walmarts. Every for-profit business does. Your sales process has to be built to protect profitability, because the CFO on the other side of the table is doing exactly that math. Every dollar they spend on you is a dollar they can't spend on something else. If your pitch doesn't answer that, capital efficiency wins and you don't.

5. The Heartbreak Budget

This is the one that actually changes behavior. Mike's a competitive rower, and rowing coaches ask three questions: What do you want? How bad do you want it? What price are you willing to pay?

In sales, most people only budget for the win. They set a revenue goal and stop there. They don't budget for the rejections required to get it.

If your goal is 5 real conversations a day, the honest math says you'll hear "no" roughly 4 times to get there. That's not a sign something's broken. That's the budget. Commit to the 4 no's on purpose, and the 1 yes takes care of itself.

Work backward from there: how many dials, how many emails, how many companies researched, to get 5 real conversations. AI can make each of those steps faster. It cannot change the ratio. Fail, fail, fail, fail, until you win, then reset and go again.

None of these five are new. They were true 35 years ago with a landline and a pay phone in your territory, and they're true with an AI stack running in the background. The tools change the speed. They don't change the math.

Sprint Club is the map itself: the 8 Steps of the Repeatable Sale, written down, shared with your whole team, so the next hire stops stealing your time asking questions and starts closing. It's the same map about 2,400 Strategy Sprints alumni have used. Free for 7 days.
